California Medium Red Pitch
You have found it: a quality domestic alternative to German Red Pitch. It is made of all natural products (resin, powered brick and tallow) right here in the USA.
Medium pitch is the perfect blend between soft and hard pitch. It allows enough support and adhesion while still being soft enough for high relief chasing and repousse. It also has a lower density so it takes only about 3-1/2 lbs. to fill an 8" pitch bowl instead of the 6 lbs. of German Red Pitch that would be needed.
It easily mixes with California Soft Pitch or California Hard Pitch if you wish to formulate consistency that is more desirable to you. If you already have German Red Pitch, you can mix in California Pitch to add volume to your bowl.
Sold in 2 lb. bags.
Choosing the right pitch for you:
Soft pitch melts at low temperatures and is great for filling hollow-ware as it is easy to pour. As expected, soft pitch “gives” more and is more responsive to the forces of the tools and is great for deep forming. Also soft pitch is for high relief and/or working in colder temperatures, although soft pitch is too soft for chasing and planishing.
Medium pitch is a good all around pitch. It gives enough to form deep repousse´d areas and is firm enough to chase on. Medium pitch is for room temperature work- between 65 and 80°.
Hard pitch is useful for detailed work using engraving or chiseling tools and for planishing. Hard pitch is also for working in hot temperatures.
