To help you in your search for that certain jewelry text writer, we have organized our books by author. Now not only can you find all of their books that we stock grouped together. You might even find out some interesting information about them and their craft.

So go ahead; browse and meet the authors of those wonderful jewelry books.

Adelson, Debra
Using classical jewelers' techniques, Debra constructs her pieces from a combination of hand fabricated sterling, hand carved acrylic, and natural gemstones whose settings functionally hold the pieces together.

Debra earned her degree in Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing at Tyler School of Art.

At Tyler she made more tableware than jewelry, even though she was in the jewelry program. Debra is a natural object maker, and tends to think of designs for objects that function. For years she only exhibited objects (tableware, Judaica, baby gifts, etc.) in her booth at shows, but was really encouraged by her customers to make jewelry.

Debra goes about designing her jewelry in much of the same way she does when designing an object: the materials help guide her design choices. "I first decide some key elements, most importantly how the materials will be attached together. When using materials that need to be cold-joined like sterling silver and acrylic, determining how the pieces will be attached together is an important decision" says Debra. She prefers to make all of her design elements such as rivets or bolts part of the aesthetic of the piece.

Also at Tyler she was encouraged to experiment with materials other than those commonly used by other jewelers. She was immediately drawn to working with acrylic because of its versatility: it is light, durable, and capable of being shaped and formed. It also gives Debra the ability to use vivid colors that she can control. Each piece of acrylic starts as a block or sheet, and is cut, carved, sanded, and dyed.

Patti Bullard
Patti Bullard, Ph.D. is a jewelry maker experienced in a wide range of techniques.

Her years of experience have made her well acquainted with the needs and frustrations of other jewelry makers. Her exploration of tools led her to the surprising and little mentioned fact that most tools used by jewelers were designed for use in other fields such as electronics and aeronautics.

Her search for the "perfect" jewelry making tools led her to develop her own; Wubbers. Her passion for teaching classes and seminars in jewelry making helped her realize the having the proper tool is very important. Not only is the right tool critical in to doing a good job, but they are help drive creative success and allow you to use your time and energy productively. You will enjoy the creative process much more when the tools help you.

Patti's Wubbers are pliers with a fun name but designed with precision, versatility and durability in mind.

Eugenia Chan
Eugenia Chan has had a life-long fascination with the arts. She was born into humble beginnings in Hong Kong and studied to become a registered nurse, working in the medical field and as a midwife until she married. She then chose to develop her business skills and ran a successful antique auto parts manufacturing business. After immigrating to Vancouver, Canada in 1976, Eugenia developed a pool and spa business and eventually, branched out to enjoy a successful career in real estate.

All the while, she longed to pursue and further explore her artistic instincts and interests. Finally, after retiring in 2009, she got the chance. Quilting, sewing and watercolor painting had always been some of her fondest activities, but it wasn't until she discovered the world of jewelry making that she uncovered her true passion and came into her own as an artist and teacher.

One might say that Eugenia found her niche through serendipity. In 2007, while browsing in her local bookstore, she happened upon a release called "Bead on A Wire" (North Light Books 2005) by American wire artist, Sharilyn Miller. She was immediately intrigued. The highly ornate and complex level of wire wrapping piqued her interest and spoke to her artistic senses. She immediately arranged to travel to California to study with Sharilyn, an acknowledged authority in this style of wire wrapping and that is how Eugenia started her new career.

Metal, Polymer Clay and Enamel. Always on the lookout for new techniques and ideas, Eugenia loves to explore what happens when she combines more than one art medium. She is impressed with the versatility of metal and how she can play with color, especially when using copper. Today, the fusion of metal, polymer clay and enameling is taking her to a whole new level as her work evolves and she discovers what she can create using color, texture and shape.

Eugenia shares her home and studio with her beloved Malti-Poo, Miss Karlie. She divides her time between creating new designs and teaching her love of art and design to students of all levels. Her workshops are held regularly in the Greater Vancouver area and on a more limited basis in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Bill Fretz
William Fretz got his start in jewelry making while in high school in Pennsylvania. His essay "Creativity" was read at the graduation ceremonies. He graduated with High Honors, and received a BFA from The Rochester Institute of Technology's School for American Craftsmen in 1969. Since then, he has shown his work in galleries and juried shows in the United States and Mexico. He taught silversmithing at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and jewelry at The Portland School of Art. It was during this time that his regrinding of hammers and stakes would later lead to tool design.

Bill opened his first workshop in 1970 in St. Peters, Pennsylvania with his wife Marian.  In 1974 they moved to Keenebunkport, Maine.  This was the same year that they both were in the World Silver Show in Mexico City.  Over the years he has won numerous awards and commissions, including a commission from Paul Newman to make a presentation sculpture for the Hole in the Wall Camp. In 2000, Mr. Fretz, working with Jordan Fretz, won first place in the Maine Jewelers Association's Annual Design Contest for a 22K mesh bracelet.

In 2001, he began making models for a line of jewelers' tools. These tools are now being distributed by major catalog companies. In July, 2004, Mr. Fretz won a Maine Technology Institute Grant to design new stakes and a hammer to go with these new tools.  Today his line of hammers is manufactured is his son, Jordan's,  workshop in Vietnam.  Bill and his wife continue their design work in Buckport, Maine.

Etching
The E3 Etch system includes a controller for electrical etching. Designs are simply applied to metal with a resist and then the copper, brass, bronze, or silver is etched using the controller in conjunction with an electrolyte solution. The solutions used with our system are less harmful than traditional etching chemicals, which are hazardous to ship and dispose of. Our recommended solutions can be used over and over, as the metal ions do not saturate the original solution. The copper or silver you etch away is simply plated to the bottom of a stainless steel pan and can be reclaimed and recycled. The controller is programmed to constantly read and adjust the power to etch evenly and consistently without user intervention.

Cubitron Abrasives from 3M
3M CUBITRON is 3M's patented purple ceramic aluminum oxide abrasive that sharpens itself during use. After initial grinding, the abrasive grains fracture along micro fissures to create new cutting surfaces. This process continues throughout the grinding. The result is an abrasive that lasts 2-4 times longer than traditional aluminum oxides (depending on the grit). You will have faster removal of material with less heat and "loading" (debris build up on the abrasive itself). A die-hard rockhound, lapidary, and wire jewelry designer, instructor and author, Dale Armstrong credits her mom for spurring the main interest that led to Dale’s chosen career. Her mother was an avid rockhound and many, weekend family adventures involved traipsing through the White Mountains of New Hampshire in search of abandoned pegmatite mines. This is where Dale’s fascination with, and education of rocks and minerals began, some 40 years ago.

Dale/Cougar, has a diverse art background, training in two-dimensional art with Carl Haskins of Vermont, and William Keyworth of New Hampshire. She also spent several years receiving personalized instruction with Karl Drerupe, renowned cloisonné and repossé artist. Dale attended the University of South Florida where she studied fine arts and geology. She worked as a technical, advertising artist for several years, ‘before the age of computers’.

Under her studio name of Cougar’s Creations, Dale displays her works at juried art shows, where she has taken many awards. As a featured artist, Dale has been interviewed on live television and has works for sale in museums and galleries. Dale “Cougar” Armstrong is a regular contributor to Step-by-Step Wire Jewelry magazine and has been published in The Wire Artist Jeweler, Bead Unique and Art Jewelry magazines. She is a frequent instructor at Lapidary Journals’ BeadFest events, and has made a series of instructional DVDs, produced by Jewelry Television.
